Dr. Hemchandra Chaturvedi (13th February 1939 - 29th October 2001) was a renowned surgeon born on 13th February, 1939 to Late Shri Ram Lal Chaturvedi and Late Smt. Sridevi Chaturvedi. He was born in the village of Tarsokhar, Madhya Pradesh. After living for a short while in the town of Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, his parents made the decision to move to Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, in the pursuit of better opportunities and education for their son and his siblings.
The family lived modestly, as Dr. Hemchandra Chaturvedi had 7 siblings and his father was the sole breadwinner of the family. In spite of unfavorable economic conditions, he decided to pursue the field of Medicine and in it, he chose to pursue the field of Surgery, which he was to accomplish even in the face of gruelling adversity.
Education
Dr. Hemchandra Chaturvedi completed his primary schooling from Raghumal Arya Vidyalaya in Kolkata. From there, he went to Vidyasagar College, Kolkata, for further studies before embarking on his Medical Education. He completed his MBBS from Calcutta Medical College in the year of 1962. After working at SSKM Hospital, Kolkata for a few years, he completed his Master of Surgery in 1967 from King George’s Medical University, Lucknow.
Marriage
He married Smt. Mamta Chaturvedi on 29th January, 1967.
Career
He joined the Department of Neurosurgery at AIIMS, New Delhi as a Registrar under the renowned Professor Dr. P.N. Tandon. Driven by the desire to start his own practice, he soon moved to Kolkata.
In addition to his private clinics in Kolkata at Vivekanand Road, Chowrangee Road and Girish Park, he was associated as a surgeon with the following hospitals:
- CMRI Hospital at Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata, West Bengal.
- Belle Vue Clinic, Kolkata, West Bengal.
- Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal.
He believed in serving society through his professional work and hence throughout his career, he performed charitable work at a number of institutions, one of which was the Marwari Relief Society Hospital, Ravindra Sarani, Kolkata, West Bengal.
He spoke at various medical conferences throughout his career.
